Covenant House Washington conducts an array of events to highlight the needs of youth and to unite family and community members. Help support CHW by volunteering for one of our internships, special events, or other volunteer opportunities.
Executive
Office Intern
The Executive Intern will work closely with the Executive Director of Covenant
House Washington and will be responsible for performing management assignments.
The assignments will be within the broad realm of non-profit management and
may include tasks associated with the Board of Directors and its governance
functions. Other responsibilities may involve functions in areas such as financial
management and resource development. The days and time will be determined
based on Intern availability.
Resource
Development- Research Intern
An intern is needed to assist the Director of Resource Development. Duties
include searching the Internet, searching hard and electronic files, compiling
and generation donor profiles, and classifying information. The days and time
will be determined based on volunteer availability.
Communications
Intern
The Communications intern will assist the Director of Communications in writing
and disseminating press releases; researching and writing articles for the
Capital Covenant newsletter, the organizational annual report, and other publications;
filing and disseminating photos; assembling newcomer packets; making follow-up
calls to reporters regarding upcoming events and activities; producing flyers
and invitations for upcoming events.
Recreation
- Recreation Assistant
Volunteers assist the Recreation Specialist with a variety of planned activities
for youth. Activities include, but are not limited to, games, sports, arts
and craft, and exercises. Volunteers are welcome to present other activities.
Volunteers are needed Monday - Friday 12:00 noon -
2:00 p.m.
Legal
Services- Street Law Instructors
Volunteers contribute by assisting in translating legal language and concepts
into easily understood lay terms. Weekly classes are tailored to address the
needs of youth. The curriculum covers topics such as child support, gang violence,
the rights of unwed parents, responding to the police, and public housing
laws. Street law is held every Friday from 10:00a.m. -11:00a.m. at the Community
Service Center.
Assessment
Assistants
Volunteers assist the Assessment Specialists in scoring Adult Basic Education
tests. Volunteers are needed Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between the hours
of 9:30a.m. - 3:30p.m. at the Covenant House Washington Community Service
Center.
Youth
Advocacy - Horticulture Instructor
Volunteers with knowledge of landscaping, gardening, or horticulture are needed
to donate their time and expertise. Volunteers will teach youth about plants
and gardening. The youth will design, plant, and maintain a garden in the
front yard of CHW's Community Service Center. This is a great opportunity
for anyone with a green thumb and a heart for youth. The days and time will
be determined based on volunteer availability.
Education
Assistants
Volunteers tutor youth between the ages of 17 to 21 in reading, mathematics,
communication skills, science, social studies, foreign languages and the development
of problem-solving and critical thinking. Volunteers are needed Monday through
Friday during these three time frames: 9:30a.m. - 11:45a.m, /1:15p.m. - 3:30p.m.
/ 4:00p.m. - 8:00p.m. Tutorial activities will occur at the Covenant House
Washington Community Service Center.
Outreach
After-School Program-Tutors
Volunteers provide tutorial assistance for youth in grades 3 through 10 who
frequent the Outreach Center. Volunteers will also conduct and monitor activities
that aid in youth educational and vocational development. Volunteers are needed
Monday through Friday during the hours of 3:30p.m. to 5:00p.m. Tutorial activities
will take place at the Covenant House Washington Outreach Center located at
1920 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., SE - WDC 20020.
Residential
Services- Parenting Mentor
Volunteers are needed to provide activities for children who are between the
ages of 0 to 5 while their parents participate in various training and community
activities. Volunteers are needed Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:45p.m. - 8:30p.m.
and Saturday, 10:00a.m. - noon. Volunteers must enjoy working with young children
and should exhibit patience, energy and enthusiasm.
Activities will take place at our Residential Facilities.
Skills
Enhancement Program - Instructors
Volunteers assist by providing instruction through a variety of models such
as the occupation-specific criteria that enable each student to master topics
and develop and retain skills needed for life and future career endeavors.
Volunteers are needed to assist the Skills Enhancement Specialists in tutoring
youth between the ages of 17 to 21in reading, math and language arts. In addition
volunteers are asked to provide the Specialists with feedback on successes
and challenges facing the youth. Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday
during the following three time frames: 9:30a.m. - Noon / 4:00p.m. - 6:00p.m.
/ 6:00p.m. - 8:00p.m.
The
Artisans program
is seeking experienced wood artisans to contribute to the training of a new
generation of traditional woodworkers. Individuals who are passionate about
sharing their skills, as cabinetmakers, turners, millwrights, furniture makers,
and architectural woodworkers, with a small team of young adults would enjoy
this opportunity. We are seeking individuals who are interested in sharing
three hours or more on weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. The workshop is
under development weekdays during the hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The Artisan's shop is location at 1235 Kenilworth Ave., NE - WDC.
Summer Basketball Tournament
This annual
tournament is designed to engage youth in an activity that allows them to
express their competitive energies in positive and rewarding ways. Male and
female teams vie for championship titles; community members also come together
to support and encourage young athletes. Last year, WNBA Mystics Players Murriel
Page and Keisha Anderson were on hand to sign autographs and offer playing
tips. Prominent players are expected to attend this year's tournament too.

Children Have Worth Sunday
This special
mass celebrates the value of all children, with particular focus on at-risk
youth. With the theme Love, Lift, Liberate, the worship series is designed
to promote awareness of the ongoing needs of at-risk youth in the metropolitan
area and to highlight the positive attributes these young people possess.

Youth Achievement & Recognition Night
After
taking the important step to turn their lives around, youth need motivation
and encouragement to continue in the right direction. Youth Achievement &
Recognition Night honors the significant strides youth have made in reaching
specific goals--from earning a GED to finding permanent housing. For youth,
this program represents the first tasks they've ever completed. It's a major
moment for the youth and for Covenant House Washington.

Family Fest
Family Fest was created to promote the importance of family and healthy relationships in a fun-filled atmosphere. Community members are asked to come out for fellowship, food and fun. Jump Start for Success
Jump Start
for Success is an annual enrichment program sponsored by CHW with the aim
of getting youth excited about learning and returning to school after the
summer break. Youth will enjoy field trips and will participate in an array
of activities-from arts and crafts to community exploration and journal writing
exercises-all with the intent to spark their enthusiasm for learning.

Job Fair
More than
20 local and regional employers and training agencies will be present seeking
to fill full-time, permanent positions. The event is open to all person, especially
youth interested in securing stable employment. Covenant House Washington
seeks to provide companies with skilled applicants from untapped labor sources
such as displaced workers, welfare-to-work candidates, and youth who have
completed the organization's Employment Skills program.

The
New Image Clothing Store
Store Clerk
Volunteers are needed to assist in the management and operation of the clothing
store. Volunteers will also assist youth in selecting clothing as well as
other needed items. The New Image store is located at our Community Outreach
office at 1920 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave, SE - WDC 20020. This assignment
is flexible and the store will be open according to the availability of volunteers.
Groups are encouraged to participate in the New Image project.
Street
Law Intern
The Street Law Intern will contribute by assisting in educating, promoting,
and developing youth leadership skills by encouraging youth advocacy and empowerment.
The intern will help teach youth about their legal rights and responsibilities
and advocate for a public policy agenda on behalf of children and families.
PSP3
Intern
The PSP3 Intern will be responsible for maintaining the conduct level of approximately
ten youth in training sessions; assisting the facilitator of the training
sessions in program-related tasks; assisting the program coordinator in areas
of tracking; identifying any issues raised in training sessions; creative
activities.


The Human Resources Intern will assist the Director of Human Resources in updating and converting Lotus Freelance Presentations to Microsoft office software; updating the HR database; and operating ABRA, the HR information system.
